What is this Teacher thinking?

Posted on Monday 9 March 2009 at 05:22
My sons History teacher has a project that she has the kids do every year that coincides with her Depression Era segment. This project involves interviewing someone who lived during the Depression. Sounds like a good idea huh? One problem. Anyone born lets say when the Depression began in 1929 with the stock market crash would be 80 years old today. But an 80 year old wont really know what it is like to live thru' the Depression cause they are too young, just born, a baby. The Depression went from 1929 and ended around the beginning WWII (1939). So to do this project we need someone who was around during that 10 year span. Okay we are looking at 80-90 year olds. or older right? Well 80-90 is too young! For the most part they would have been children then and while their families may have been impacted on some level they aren't likely to see it that way because it is all they knew. My mother in law who is 95 right now was 15 during the hight of the depression. Her perspective would be vastly different then her parents but could give my son a good idea what the depression was like. At 15 she shoulder a lot of responsiblity in helping the family make ends meet. Only problem is she is 95, her memory isn't that great any more and her ability to share with my son, her grandson, what it was like is even worse.
How on earth does this teacher expect the kids to find someone, anyone who can adequately recount their experience and memories of the depresson? My son is going to interview his grandmother but we are not optomistic that he will gain the info. he needs. The project is worth 100 points to boot! What is this teacher thinking? Talk up setting up students to fail.
BTW her suggestion to the kids if they don't know someone personally who lived thru' the depression is to go to a rest home and talk to a complete (old) stranger! Ya right. Talking to an older, hard of hearing person who you know is difficult most times but make that a complete stranger makes it all the more so. I sure hope his grandma is able to give him what he needs or we will have to tour the assisted living home and find us a chatty old person. I will let you know how it goes :)

Twenty Questions

Posted on Saturday 7 March 2009 at 07:17
Saw this on Laurie's blog and thought I would do it too :)

1. Who was your first love?
Warren. We were in the sixth grade together.

2. Who was your first kiss and when?
Again, Warren. We were ‘boyfriend and girlfriend’ in the 8th grade.

3. Who was your first prom date?
Oh my can you guess? Yup Warren. We weren’t dating at the time but we promised each other that when it was time for our Prom and we weren’t dating anyone that we would go together. Well, he dropped out of school so he didn’t have a prom, by this time we went to different schools, so when it was time for my schools prom (actually called a Senior Ball, Juniors have a Prom and I didn’t want to go to that when I was a Junior) I wasn’t dating anyone but really wanted to go to the Senior Ball so I asked Warren to the Ball just as we promised when we were 12.

4. Who was your first room mate?
I had 3 roommates. Debbie, Shirley, and Sharon.

5. What was your first job?
Worked at Steccones in Oakland and made squeegees.

6. What was your first car?
Oldsmobile Cutless Supreme.

7. When did you go to your first funeral?
Warrens dads funeral.

9. How old were you when you first moved away from your hometown?
hmmmm I am not sure I really had a ‘hometown’ for the first 10 years of my life we moved every 3 years. I guess the first place I moved to was from Casper Wyoming to Denver Colorado.

10. Who was your first grade teacher?
Geez I don’t know.
11. Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane?
The first one I remember was when we went to Disneyland.

13. Where did you go for your first date and who was it with?
My first ‘date’ outside of Warren was Wilson he was a very sexy Puerto Rican.

14. When you snuck out of your house for the first time, who was it with?
I was too afraid to do that.

15. Who was your first best friend and are you still friends with them?
I have had a lot of friends but none I felt I could depend on until I was about 22 years old. Her name is Kristine and we are still friends today.

16. Who was the first person to send you flowers?
Lee

17. Where did you live the first time you moved out of your parents house?
Point Loma Nazarene University dorm.

18. Who is the first person you call when you have a bad day?
My husband.

19. Who's wedding were you in the first time you were a bridesmaid or a groomsmen?
Roxanne (how odd that is the same as Laurie)

20. What is the first thing you do in the morning?
Put my glasses on and take out my retainers.

A brief update.

I have totally lost my blogging mojo. I come here and read and comment but actually doing a post just hasn't been happening. I've been spending a lot of time on Facebook lately. I've even abadoned my Myspace page for Facebook. I have reconnected with a lot of friends so that has been nice.
I haven't gotten my tattoo yet. I need to get more money together. I do have an artist picked out and the tattoo I want just need the cash and a little courage :).
In reality life has just been the same ol' same ol'. Nothing interesting. Just working, hitting the gym, cleaning house, cooking dinner and settling down to watch TV in the evening then on to bed to start all over again the next day. Boring.
Girl child is in her first High School play so she is busy busy busy all the time. Boy child has been working hard at school work. School is such a struggle for him. He hates 'busy' work aka homework. It stresses him out. He gets really good grades (6 'A's 2 B's this term) but he can't handle all the homework. If he could just go to class, do no homework and take the tests (he does really well with tests) he would be much happier.
Well that is about it. I will try to blog about 'parents with the heads in the sand' later this week so stay tuned :)

I am gonna do it!

I am going to be getting a tattoo :) I've wanted one for ages and now I am going to do it. I am not sure exactly when. I have a friend who wants to go with me so I need to wait until she can come plus I need to make the appointment with the artist. It will be soon tho'.
I am going to get a sparrow. My favorite hymn is 'His Eye is on the Sparrow' The chorus is..."I sing because I am happy, I sing because I am free, His eye is on the sparrow so I know He watches me". Now of course those words are much too much for a tattoo but a sparrow will represent those words to me. Here is a picture of what I want.

It will have blues, purples and greens in it. So what do you all think?

Trying to get into the Christmas spirit....

Posted on Wednesday 24 December 2008 at 10:40
I love Christmas but this year every plan and I mean EVERY plan I made has been ruined due to our freak weather. Last week was to be the last week of school before Winter break. It is a fun week. The kids at school are excited for break. The class Holiday parties, the staff Holiday parties, my kids choir concerts. You know just the hustle and bustle before Christmas. All of which kicks off the season. But being as we experienced snow and ice last week all events and school was cancelled :( Last Sunday, which is the Sunday before Christmas, was our churches Christmas service. With special music and Christmas carols but church was cancelled due to the largest snow/ice storm Oregon has seen in 40 years! Since we got so much snow and have very little infrastructure resources the city pretty much stopped. The weather hasn't helped either. We couldn't get out of the 20's let alone above freezing to begin to melt this mess, until today! Yipppeeee right? NOT. Because of all the snow it will take a while to get rid of it. The main roads are much better but the side streets are not passable. So now Christmas eve services have been cancelled :( Grrrrrr. Along with Christmas eve being cancelled my mom is not coming over for Christmas eve or Christmas. It is just too dangerous for her to get around being as she had knee replacment surgery a couple of months ago. Also, my brother (we have Christmas dinner at his house) decided to reschedule the dinner for Saturday when it will be easier to get to his house! To add insult to injure my Christmas present that was coming via UPS and was scheduled for delivery today didn't come!!!!!!!! UPS tracking says 'Rescheduled EMERGENCY CONDITIONS BEYOND UPS' CONTROL '
Can you believe it!?!?!?! I wont get it until Dec. 29th :( Do you want to know what my present is? It's a brand spankin new Laptop! But alas I have to wait. All this because of weather! Crap.
I am trying really heard to get my Christmas spirit back. I love Christmas and I am feeling like I am totally missing it this year :(
